Yemen Offshore Explosion: LPG Vessel Incident Under Review
Aden — An explosion aboard a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel off the coast of Yemen remains under investigation by international maritime authorities, amid growing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
The incident occurred on October 14 near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital chokepoint for global energy and cargo shipments. Initial reports indicate that the blast originated in the vessel’s engine room while en route to Djibouti, causing significant damage but no confirmed fatalities. The crew was evacuated and rescued by nearby support vessels.
Yemeni port officials and international maritime agencies have launched a joint inquiry to determine the cause of the explosion. While sabotage has not been ruled out, investigators are also examining potential mechanical failure or gas leakage as contributing factors.
The vessel, flagged under a foreign registry, was reportedly carrying LPG cargo bound for East African markets. Its operators have yet to issue a formal statement, and the ship remains anchored under guard pending inspection.
The explosion comes amid heightened tensions in the Red Sea, where recent attacks on commercial vessels and increased smuggling activity have raised alarms among regional navies and shipping companies. The Bab al-Mandab corridor has seen a surge in naval patrols following incidents linked to Houthi forces and other non-state actors.
Maritime analysts warn that any disruption to LPG and oil shipments through the Red Sea could have ripple effects on global energy markets. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has urged vessels transiting the area to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to secure the vessel and ensure environmental safety, with no reported leakage of hazardous materials into the sea.
