UNESCO Adopts Resolution to Support Yemen’s Cultural Heritage and Education
Sana'a -- UNESCO has officially adopted a resolution to support the country’s efforts in safeguarding cultural heritage, education, higher education, and media, amid the challenges posed by prolonged conflict and humanitarian crisis.
The resolution, passed during the 43rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference held in Paris in late October 2025, outlines a comprehensive framework for technical assistance, capacity building, and international cooperation to help Yemen preserve its rich historical legacy and strengthen its educational infrastructure. The initiative was introduced under item 4.26 of the revised agenda, following a recommendation by UNESCO’s Executive Board at its 222nd session.
UNESCO emphasized the urgency of protecting Yemen’s endangered cultural sites, including World Heritage properties such as the Historic Town of Zabid and the Old City of Sana’a, which have suffered damage due to armed conflict and neglect. The resolution also calls for enhanced support to Yemeni institutions working in education and media, recognizing their vital role in promoting peace, civic engagement, and national identity.
The adopted plan includes:
- Emergency interventions to safeguard cultural landmarks at risk of collapse or destruction.
- Training programs for Yemeni educators and heritage professionals to ensure continuity of learning and preservation efforts.
- Support for higher education and media institutions to foster inclusive dialogue and counter misinformation.
- Mobilization of international funding and expertise to implement the resolution’s goals in coordination with Yemeni authorities and civil society.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay welcomed the resolution, stating that “Yemen’s cultural heritage is a testament to human creativity and resilience. Protecting it is not only a moral imperative but a foundation for future peace and development.”
Yemeni representatives expressed gratitude for the renewed commitment, noting that the resolution aligns with national priorities and offers hope for rebuilding the country’s intellectual and cultural foundations.
