EU Confirms Italian Frigate Secured Safe Passage for Commercial Ships in Red Sea
Aden — The European Union has confirmed that the Italian frigate ITS Marceglia, operating under its maritime security mission in the Red Sea, successfully escorted a new group of commercial vessels through one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways.
The operation is part of the EU’s ASPIDES naval mission, launched to safeguard international shipping lanes amid rising threats to maritime navigation in the region. According to a statement from the EU Naval Force, Marceglia ensured the safe transit of multiple merchant ships, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to protecting global trade and deterring hostile actions.
“This escort mission reflects our determination to uphold freedom of navigation and support international maritime security,” the EU statement read. The frigate’s deployment comes amid heightened concerns over attacks on commercial vessels, particularly in areas near Yemen’s coast, where Houthi forces have previously targeted shipping.
The EU’s Red Sea mission has become increasingly critical following disruptions caused by regional conflicts and the targeting of civilian maritime traffic. Over the past year, more than 640 merchant ships have benefited from EU naval protection.
Italian defense officials praised the performance of Marceglia, highlighting its advanced surveillance and defense capabilities. The frigate is equipped with multi-role systems designed to counter aerial, surface, and underwater threats, making it a key asset in the EU’s coordinated naval efforts.
The EU Council recently extended the ASPIDES operation until 2026, citing its success in deterring attacks and maintaining stability across key maritime routes. The mission includes contributions from over 20 EU member states, each deploying naval assets to support the initiative.
As global shipping continues to face risks from regional instability, piracy, and geopolitical tensions, the EU’s proactive stance in the Red Sea underscores its strategic role in securing international trade corridors.
