Aden — The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Yemen has issued a new decision prohibiting the hunting and trade of sea turtles, as part of its broader efforts to safeguard marine biodiversity and prevent the species from extinction.

The ministry emphasized that sea turtles, which play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of coastal and marine environments, have faced increasing threats from overfishing, illegal trade, and habitat destruction. 

The ban aims to curb these pressures and ensure the long-term survival of the species in Yemeni waters.

Officials noted that the decision aligns with international conservation standards and reflects Yemen’s commitment to protecting endangered wildlife. 

The ministry also urged local communities, fishermen, and traders to comply with the new regulations, stressing that violators will face legal consequences.

Environmental experts welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step toward preserving Yemen’s fragile marine ecosystems.

They highlighted that sea turtles are not only a natural heritage but also a key indicator of ocean health.

The ministry confirmed that awareness campaigns will accompany the enforcement of the ban, aiming to educate the public on the importance of protecting sea turtles and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
