Abyan — Fierce clashes between Yemeni government forces and militants from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have left multiple casualties in the southern province of Abyan, according to military and local sources.

The fighting erupted at dawn in the Wadi Omran area, where AQAP fighters launched a surprise attack targeting units affiliated with the Southern Armed Forces. The assault involved heavy weaponry, including mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, triggering intense combat that lasted several hours.

At least five soldiers were confirmed killed and four others wounded, according to a statement by Southern Transitional Council (STC) spokesman Mohammed Al-Naqib. “The terrorist elements retreated to their hiding places after failing to seize control of the area,” he said, adding that the operation was part of a broader campaign to dismantle AQAP’s presence in Abyan.

AQAP has intensified its operations in southern Yemen in recent months, exploiting the country’s fragmented security landscape. Analysts warn that the group is seeking to regain influence in its former strongholds after setbacks in the north.

The latest violence underscores the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in Yemen, despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts supported by regional and international partners.
