The UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, spoke on Friday about de-escalation efforts and a political solution in the country.

During talks with Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik in Riyadh, the envoy reaffirmed that he is very keen on reaching a political solution that would put an end to the people’s suffering.

Griffiths thanked the Yemeni PM for “his cooperation in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid and to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.”

The Saba news agency said Griffiths and Abdulmalik discussed the ongoing military escalation by Houthi militias on several fronts, and the atrocities they have committed against civilians, namely in Al Jawf governorate.

Talks also touched on the militias’ rejection to implement the Stockholm Agreement, and their recurrent violations of the truce.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government's full support for the efforts made by the UN envoy for a successful political process, and to establish comprehensive peace based on the three terms of reference.

“The continued Houthi determination to foil peace efforts in Yemen proves their lack of seriousness” in resolving the country’s crisis, Saba quoted Abdulmalik as saying.

He called for taking stern measures against Houthi intransigence. “Any disregard to their actions would encourage the militias to commit more crimes against the Yemeni people and prolong the war in Yemen, in line with Iran’s agenda, which threatens regional and international security and stability.”

“Under the directives of Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, we will continue to support all UN efforts, which should be firmer and clearer to confront the violations committed by the coup rebels,” he said.
