On February 15, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2201 aimed at resolving the crisis in the Republic of Yemen in response to the deteriorating political situation.
It calls on all sides to step up efforts to resolve disputes through inclusive dialogue and implementation of the agreements based on the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the outcome of the National Dialogue Conference and the United Nations-mediated Peace and National Partnership Agreement.
The Resolution urges all sides in the conflict to cease all hostilities and acts of violence and renounce provocations and unilateral steps that could undermine the political transition process. It contains a provision on the need to agree deadlines for completing work on a draft constitution and holding a referendum and subsequent elections on that basis. Importantly, the resolution underscores the need for collective efforts to counter the increased terrorist threat in the country and the region.
Russia supports the mediation efforts by the UN special envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, aimed at finding a comprehensive formula for national reconciliation and a long-term political settlement between the Yemenis themselves, without imposing ready-made solutions from the outside. We are ready to continue facilitating the democratic transformation of Yemeni society both at the bilateral and international level, including the UN Security Council. The only solution to the Yemen crisis is through a peaceful, inclusive, orderly and Yemeni-led political transition process that meets the legitimate demands and aspirations of the Yemeni people for peaceful change and meaningful political, economic and social reforms.
