Yemen : Houthis Launch Government Restructuring After Israeli Strikes Kill Senior Leaders in Sanaa

Sanaa — Yemen’s Houthis has announced a sweeping government reshuffle and new appointments in response to the recent Israeli airstrikes that killed several top officials, including Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi. The move is seen as an urgent attempt to restore internal cohesion and project stability amid growing regional tensions.
In a televised statement, Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, confirmed the appointment of Mohamed Moftah as acting prime minister, alongside a restructured cabinet that includes new ministers for defense, interior, and foreign affairs. The reshuffle follows the August 24 airstrikes on Sanaa, which targeted key Houthi military and political sites, including the presidential palace and strategic infrastructure.
“The blood of our martyrs will fuel our resilience,” al-Mashat declared, vowing to continue building the group’s military capabilities and governance structures despite the losses.
The Israeli military said the strikes were aimed at disrupting Houthi operations linked to drone and missile attacks on Israel and its allies, allegedly coordinated with Iranian support. The Houthis have since pledged retaliation, including a claimed missile strike on an Israeli oil tanker in the Red Sea.
Analysts say the Houthis’ swift reorganization reflects both a desire to maintain control over their territories and to signal defiance in the face of escalating Israeli pressure. The group has also intensified its rhetoric, framing the restructuring as part of a broader “resistance strategy” aligned with regional anti-Israel sentiment.
Despite the reshuffle, questions remain about the depth of the leadership vacuum and the group’s ability to manage simultaneous military and political challenges. Humanitarian agencies have also expressed concern over the impact of renewed hostilities on civilians in Sanaa and surrounding areas.
