Russian Envoy and UN Mediator Discuss Risks of Escalation in Yemen Amid Israel-Houthi Tensions
Aden -- Russian Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Kordov met with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to discuss the growing risks posed to Yemen by the potential resumption of military hostilities between Israel and the Houthi rebels.
The talks, which took place against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions, focused on preventing Yemen from being drawn deeper into the Middle East conflict, particularly in light of recent Houthi threats and Israeli military responses in the Red Sea and beyond.
According to diplomatic sources, Ambassador Kordov expressed Russia’s concern over the fragile security situation in Yemen and emphasized the need for coordinated international efforts to de-escalate tensions and safeguard the country’s sovereignty and stability. He reiterated Moscow’s support for a political solution to the Yemeni crisis and warned that external military entanglements could derail peace efforts.
UN Envoy Grundberg, who has been actively mediating between Yemeni parties, echoed these concerns. He stressed that Yemen’s internal peace process must not be overshadowed by regional confrontations, and called for restraint from all actors involved. Grundberg also briefed the Russian envoy on recent developments in the UN-led negotiations and the humanitarian challenges facing the country.
“The situation in Yemen remains deeply fragile,” Grundberg said in a recent Security Council briefing, urging member states to support de-escalation efforts and protect the progress made toward a nationwide ceasefire.
The meeting comes amid fears that renewed clashes between Israel and the Houthis could trigger wider instability in the Red Sea corridor, disrupt maritime trade, and exacerbate Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.
Both diplomats agreed on the importance of maintaining diplomatic engagement and reinforcing multilateral channels to prevent further escalation.
This dialogue reflects growing international concern over the intersection of Yemen’s internal conflict and broader geopolitical tensions, as stakeholders seek to shield the country from becoming a battleground in regional rivalries.
