A Yemeni university professor was killed Sunday by unknown assailants outside his home in the southern province of Ad Dali, a local official has said. "Unidentified attackers assassinated Gamal Mekibal – an academic at Aden University in Ad Dali – outside his home," the official, who requested anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency. The attackers fled the scene of the attack unscathed, he said. A Yemeni judge was wounded and his son killed in another attack by armed tribesmen in the district of Bani al-Harith in northern Sanaa. "Armed tribesmen from the northern province of al-Jawf opened fire on judge Ahmed al-Ansi, leaving him injured," head of Yemen's Judges Club al-Jarrah Belaid told The Anadolu Agency. He said that the judge's son had been killed in the attack. According to Belaid, the attack was related to a trial being presided over by the judge. Meanwhile, an al-Qaeda-linked group on Sunday claimed to have killed a number of Shiite Houthi militants in Yemen's central Radaa city. Ansar al-Sharia group said on Twitter that its fighters had detonated a bomb at a Houthi patrol in Radaa on Friday, leaving several militants dead. There has been no comment from the Houthi group. Yemen has recently appeared to be on the verge of civil war, as the Houthis seek to expand their control beyond capital Sanaa, which they took over in late September. The Houthis' growing influence in the country has pitted it against both Al-Qaeda – said to be active in politically fractious Yemen – and allied Sunni tribes. Recent fighting between the warring camps in the country's central and western regions has left dozens dead. WB
