Yemen's Houthi militia said on Saturday that it launched three bomb-laden drones toward three Saudi border airports in the southwest of the kingdom, the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported.

The three targeted Saudi airports were in Jizan region, Abha city and Khamis Mushait city respectively, according to al-Masirah TV.

"The attack came in response to the Saudi-led coalition's blockade on the Yemeni people," the TV quoted a statement from the Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea as saying.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV reported that the coalition intercepted and destroyed an explosive-laden drone fired by the Houthi militia from Yemen toward Saudi Arabia, without providing more details.

The Iran-backed Yemeni Shiite Houthi militia has recently intensified cross-border drone or missile attacks on Saudi civilian facilities. Most of the drones and missiles had been reportedly foiled by the Saudi-led coalition forces.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi militia seized control of several northern provinces and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in 2015 to support the government of Hadi.
