Houthi Official’s Vehicle Fatally Strikes Pomegranate Vendors in Ibb, Yemen

Ibb — A tragic incident in the city of Ibb has sparked outrage after a vehicle belonging to a senior Houthi official fatally struck a man and two children who were selling pomegranates on the roadside. Local sources confirmed that the victims were part of a family of street vendors struggling to earn a living amid Yemen’s deepening economic crisis.
Eyewitnesses reported that the speeding vehicle, allegedly driven by a bodyguard of the Houthi official, veered into a crowded area near Al-Dhihar district, killing the three vendors instantly and injuring others nearby. The official, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, reportedly left the scene under heavy armed escort without offering assistance or facing immediate accountability.
The victims—one adult male and two boys under the age of 12—were known in the neighborhood for selling fruit to support their displaced family. Their deaths have ignited public anger, with residents accusing Houthi authorities of impunity and reckless disregard for civilian lives.
“This is not just a traffic accident—it’s a reflection of the lawlessness and arrogance that people in Ibb live under,” said a local activist, calling for an independent investigation and justice for the victims.
Human rights groups have documented repeated abuses by Houthi officials in Ibb, including assaults on street vendors, arbitrary detentions, and extortion. The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of civilians in areas under Houthi control.
No official statement has been issued by Houthi authorities regarding the incident, and calls for accountability continue to mount across social media and local forums.
