Japanese Ambassador to Yemen: Resolution 2216 Remains the Cornerstone for a Political Solution
Sana’a – The Japanese Ambassador to Yemen, Katsuyoshi Hayashi, reaffirmed his country’s support for a peaceful resolution to the Yemeni crisis, emphasizing that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 remains the foundation for any comprehensive political settlement.
In a statement issued during a diplomatic briefing in Sana’a, Hayashi stressed Japan’s commitment to supporting UN-led efforts and regional initiatives aimed at ending the conflict. “Resolution 2216 continues to be the cornerstone for restoring legitimacy, ensuring stability, and paving the way for inclusive dialogue among all Yemeni parties,” he said.
The ambassador also highlighted Japan’s humanitarian contributions to Yemen, noting that Tokyo has provided over $100 million in aid since the outbreak of the war. He called on all parties to prioritize the interests of the Yemeni people and to engage constructively in negotiations.
Resolution 2216, adopted in 2015, demands that Houthi forces withdraw from seized territories and relinquish arms captured from military and security institutions. It also calls for the restoration of the internationally recognized government and the resumption of political dialogue.
Hayashi’s remarks come amid renewed diplomatic efforts to revive stalled peace talks, with the UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg intensifying consultations with regional stakeholders.
