EU Confirms Greek Frigate Escorts Commercial Vessel in Red Sea, Marks Second Naval Protection Mission This Month
The European Union announced that a Greek frigate operating under its maritime security mission successfully carried out a new escort operation for a commercial vessel transiting the Red Sea.
The mission, aimed at safeguarding international navigation in the region, marks the second such protective maneuver conducted by EU naval forces in October.
According to the EU’s statement, the frigate ensured the safe passage of the vessel through waters increasingly threatened by regional instability and attacks on shipping lanes.
The operation is part of the EU’s broader commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation and securing vital trade routes in the Red Sea and surrounding areas.
The EU’s naval deployment in the region has intensified in recent months amid growing concerns over maritime threats linked to the conflict in Yemen and broader geopolitical tensions. The successful escort underscores the bloc’s readiness to respond to emerging risks and protect civilian maritime traffic.
Officials reiterated that the EU’s naval presence is strictly defensive and focused on upholding international law and maritime safety.
The mission continues to coordinate closely with allied forces and regional partners to ensure the security of commercial shipping in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
