Yemen’s Houthi Finances Face Severe Strain Amid Sanctions
Sana’a — Yemeni economic sources have revealed that the Houthi militia is grappling with an acute financial crisis, as international sanctions and recent government measures sharply curtail its revenue streams.
According to the sources, the group’s traditional funding networks including taxation of trade routes, levies on businesses, and control of fuel imports have been significantly weakened.
The tightening of international restrictions, combined with domestic enforcement against illicit financial flows, has left the Houthis struggling to sustain their economic base.
“The Houthis are facing one of their toughest financial challenges since the start of the conflict,” one source noted, adding that the crisis could erode the group’s grip on power if sustained.
The developments mark a critical juncture in Yemen’s protracted war, where economic pressure is increasingly seen as a tool to weaken armed groups and restore state authority.
