The theft of a giant telecom tower in the city of Ataq, the capital of Shabwa Governorate, which is under the control of legitimacy, combined resentment and strangeness, which provoked a state of great popular discontent due to the security chaos that the oil governorate has reached.

Local sources confirmed the sudden disappearance of a 60-meter communications tower, from the "high transmission hill" south of Ataq.

An official document issued by the governor of Shabwa, Awad bin al-Wazir, confirmed that "a communications tower in Ataq fell in mysterious circumstances and was looted by soldiers," without mentioning whether or not the thieves were caught.

The incident, which was widely circulated by Yemenis on social media, prompted some of them to demand its classification in the Guinness Book of Records list as the largest theft in the world, as well as expressions of irony and disapproval about the feasibility of stealing an iron tower that installs antennas for communications that serve the people of the province.

Governor Al-Awlaki said in his memo, which he sent to the Director General of the Office of the Ministry of Oil and Minerals and the Director of the Petroleum Exploration Authority, that the communications tower had been stolen by a military force, whose behavior he described as "outlaws."

While observers considered the governor's note a belated attempt to absorb the anger of the street.

Confirming the involvement of soldiers in the incident, the governor mentioned "the arrest of those involved in the incident, their suspension from work, and the formation of a military committee to investigate them before referring them to the judiciary."

He accused the leadership of the oil company and the Oil Exploration Authority of maintaining negligence and failure to maintain the tower, vowing not to absolve them of responsibility and refer them to the concerned authorities to take the necessary measures.

The residents held the local authority and its security and military services responsible for the deteriorating conditions in Shabwa.
