under the presidency of Algeria, the Security Council is holding This Wednesday, its monthly public information meeting and closed-door consultations on Yemen.
The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, will brief the Council in open session.
The Head of the United Nations Mission in Support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMISHA), Major General Michael Beary, is also expected to give his final briefing to the Council in closed consultations.
At the meeting, speakers and some Council members are expected to refer to ongoing Zionist aggression as a source of further instability for Yemen and the region as a whole, while calling for de-escalation, and stressing the need to respect international law, international humanitarian law (IHL) and the protection of civilian infrastructure.
The Special Envoy should brief the Council on his recent visits to the region, including to Sana'a (his first visit to the city since May 2023), and reiterate the key messages of his engagements, in particular the importance of making progress towards a roadmap for peace and a Yemeni-owned political process, and of addressing the economic and humanitarian challenges facing the Yemeni people.
The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, is expected to provide an update on the impact of the Zionist entity's latest escalations on the operational environment in Yemen.
In particular, she will echo the concerns expressed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the potential impact of the Zionist entity's airstrikes on the port of Hodeidah and Sana'a, notably on their operational capacity to import goods, with potential repercussions on humanitarian supplies, such as food and medicine, as well as essential commercial goods.
Joyce Msuya was also expected to inform Council members that the Humanitarian Response Plan 2025 (HRP) for Yemen would be published shortly, and to stress the need for continued funding for humanitarian efforts.
As a reminder, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, stated in his presentation of the Security Council's program of work for the month of January that “as an Arab member of the Security Council, the causes and issues relating to the Arab region, in particular the situation in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Sudan, remain our major concerns in the wake of the alarming developments taking place in these brotherly countries”.
He stressed that Algeria would not hesitate “to take appropriate measures when the time comes”.
