WFP Excludes Al-Qahira District in Taiz from Field Survey Despite Dire Humanitarian Conditions

Aden - The World Food Programme (WFP) has come under scrutiny after excluding Al-Qahira District, located in the heart of Taiz Governorate, from its latest field survey aimed at assessing food insecurity and humanitarian needs across Yemen.
The decision has sparked concern among local officials and residents, who say the district is facing severe economic hardship and worsening humanitarian conditions.
According to local sources, the exclusion means that thousands of vulnerable families in Al-Qahira will not be considered for upcoming aid distributions, despite the district’s proximity to conflict zones and its deteriorating access to basic services.
Community leaders have criticized the move, warning that it could deepen suffering in an area already grappling with high unemployment, inflation, and limited access to clean water and healthcare.
The WFP’s Global Report on Food Crises 2025 highlights Taiz as one of the worst-affected governorates in Yemen, with acute levels of hunger driven by conflict, displacement, and economic collapse. However, the report does not provide a clear rationale for the omission of Al-Qahira from the latest survey cycle.
Humanitarian organizations operating in Taiz have called for greater transparency and inclusivity in aid assessments, urging WFP to reconsider its methodology and ensure that all high-risk districts are accounted for. The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation has reportedly held discussions with UN agencies to address gaps in coverage and improve coordination.
Residents of Al-Qahira have appealed to international donors and humanitarian actors to intervene and ensure that aid reaches those most in need, regardless of administrative boundaries or logistical challenges.
