Yemeni Parties Demand Government Response to Houthi Leader’s Appearance at Arab Conference
Sana’a, Yemen — The unexpected participation of Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of the Iran-backed Houthi movement, at a recent Arab regional conference has ignited political controversy across Yemen.
Several Yemeni parties have condemned the move and called on the internationally recognized government to issue a formal and unequivocal response.
Al-Houthi’s presence—whether physical or virtual—at the event was seen by many as a breach of diplomatic norms and a dangerous signal of regional legitimization of a group widely accused of undermining peace efforts and committing human rights violations.
His speech reportedly included calls for continued resistance and criticism of international mediation efforts.
In a joint statement, a coalition of Yemeni political parties, including members of the Southern Transitional Council and the General People's Congress, urged the Presidential Leadership Council to clarify its position on the incident.
They warned that silence could be interpreted as tacit acceptance of the Houthi narrative and risked alienating Yemen’s allies in the Arab world.
“The appearance of a militia leader at a respected Arab platform undermines the sacrifices of the Yemeni people and the legitimacy of our government,” said one party spokesperson. “We expect a firm diplomatic stance that reflects the gravity of this breach.”
The controversy comes amid heightened tensions in the Red Sea and renewed Houthi attacks on international shipping, which have drawn condemnation from the United Nations and retaliatory strikes from the United States.
The government has yet to issue an official statement, though sources suggest internal discussions are underway to coordinate a response.
