Aden — The United Nations Security Council voted on Wednesday to extend the targeted sanctions regime on Yemen, along with the mandate of the Panel of Experts tasked with monitoring its implementation and investigating violations.

The Council’s decision comes amid ongoing concerns over arms smuggling, financial networks, and violations of international humanitarian law in the context of Yemen’s protracted conflict. The renewed sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans targeting individuals and entities deemed to threaten peace, security, or stability in Yemen.

The mandate of the Panel of Experts, originally established under Resolution 2140 (2014), has been extended through December 15, 2026. The Panel is expected to continue its investigations into arms transfers, revenue generation by armed groups, and breaches of the arms embargo imposed on the Houthi movement under Resolution 2216 (2015).

The Security Council’s decision follows the Panel’s latest report, which documented extensive violations of the sanctions regime, including illicit smuggling routes and the diversion of state revenues by armed actors Security.

Diplomatic sources indicated that while the renewal was broadly supported, discussions are ongoing regarding potential updates to the sanctions framework to reflect evolving dynamics on the ground.

The Council also reiterated its support for a comprehensive political solution to the conflict and urged all parties to engage constructively with UN-led mediation efforts.
