Yemen's Shabwa Call for Local Resource Management
Shabwa — Local authorities in Yemen’s Shabwa governorate have formally called for greater autonomy in managing the region’s natural resources, urging a model similar to that adopted in Hadramawt and Marib.
Officials emphasized the need to establish a locally owned oil company under the name PetroShabwa, which they say would ensure more transparent and equitable use of revenues for development and public services.
The proposal reflects growing demands among governorates in southern and eastern Yemen to exercise direct control over their energy wealth, amid ongoing national disputes over resource distribution.
Shabwa leaders argue that a locally managed company would strengthen accountability, create jobs, and provide a sustainable framework for rebuilding infrastructure damaged by years of conflict.
“Just as Hadramawt and Marib have taken steps to oversee their oil and gas revenues, Shabwa must also secure its right to manage its resources,” a local official stated. “The establishment of PetroShabwa is not only an economic necessity but also a matter of fairness and stability.”
The call for PetroShabwa comes at a time when regional authorities are seeking to balance local governance with national frameworks, while international donors continue to press for transparent financial management across the country.
