UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash reaffirmed that the main goal in Yemen is to restore power to the internationally-recognized government from the Houthi insurgency.
Stressing that Saudi Arabia and the UAE share the same views on Yemen, Gargash voiced the UAE’s full support for Yemeni talks planned to be held in Jeddah.
Gargash, in statements to Asharq Al-Awsat, reaffirmed that “the ultimate goal for all in Yemen is to end the war,” but linked it to first providing regional security.
He also voiced the UAE’s strong confidence in the Jeddah peace talks bringing about a solution for the conflict ailing Yemen.
“There are agreement and consensus on the shared strategic vision between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which is leading the Arab Coalition in Yemen,” the minister reaffirmed, adding that Abu Dhabi is committed to Yemenis “making their own choices.”A.Awsat
“We are in Yemen upon the invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz to participate in Decisive Storm operations and restore the Yemeni state from the grip of Houthi coupists,” Gargash said.
Salvaging Yemen from putschists, according to the top diplomat, will aid in preventing any profound strategic change in the region and ensure that the next Yemeni state is purely determined by Yemenis.
Speaking about the Jeddah dialogue, Gargash said: “We hope it restores solidarity and unity, because the goal is to restore the state and its institutions so that there are no strategic changes in the region, and no vacuum for any terrorist groups, such as (Al Qaeda), to exploit.”
“The UAE is part of the Arab Coalition, and we believe that ending the war in Yemen should not be for the sake of ending the war simply, but should be linked to providing a strategic climate for stability and security in the region,” Gargash said about speculations for when the war would end in Yemen.
