Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council has announced the formation of committees with Coalition forces to start handing over security and military positions in line with the Riyadh Agreement.

The announcement came after Yemeni Prime Minister Ma'een Abdulmalik and his government resumed their work in the temporary Yemeni capital of Aden on Wednesday.

The PM said the Agreement is a good chance for all concerned parties to conduct serious and drastic reforms to tackle the inappropriate situation in state institutions.

“There is one single battle we all must fight: It is the battle to restore the state and foil Iran's malignant scheme in Yemen and the region through its Houthi militia criminal tools. I do openly say that we shouldn't miss this good chance that may never be repeated, to put the Riyadh Agreement in place,” he said.

Abdulmalik’s remarks came as he chaired a meeting Wednesday in Aden with the local authority's leaderships and members of the local council and officials of the executive bureau of the governorate to discuss the current situation in the city and explore a comprehensive outlook about necessary measures that can help improve living conditions in the temporary capital.

A Yemeni official told Asharq Al-Awsat that the prime minister called for this urgent meeting with the executive bureau in Aden in the presence of the ministers of Finance, Oil and Electricity to address the vital needs of the governorate.

The PM said: “The government has prepared a package of urgent interventions to address the problems which have been accumulated since last August and it will work with the local authority on their implementation within the next three months.”

He noted that the government's return to Aden is the first move stipulated by the Riyadh deal sponsored by Saudi Arabia, also highly praising the great efforts made by the Kingdom’s leadership.

“The generous Saudi support has never been disrupted over the past ten years. Saudi Arabia has always been on the side of the Yemeni people and government,” Abdulmalik said.

Meanwhile, STC spokesman Nizar Haitham said that the Council has started forming joint committees with Coalition forces in Aden to implement military and security measures in the city based on the Riyadh deal.

The European Union welcomed the return of the Yemeni government to Aden, calling this move as an “essential first step in implementing the Riyadh Agreement”, and expressed its expectation for all stakeholders to “abide to the terms of the Agreement and display sincere collaboration on the ground to ensure its smooth and timely implementation.”
