A leader in the Houthi militia admitted that the Syrian authorities informed the militia representatives to evacuate the Yemeni embassy in Damascus, considering this a failure for them in “the only test of our representation in international relations.”
The Houthi leader, who is also a director in the militia's Ministry of Finance, Khaled Al-Arassi, said, "Four days ago, the Syrian leadership issued a decision to close our embassy in Damascus, and today, after the mourning ended, they conveyed the decision to our embassy."
He added in a post on his Facebook page: “The decision to close an embassy is not an easy or normal decision, and the issue constitutes a tragedy, because it means that we have failed within the framework of diplomatic representation.”
Al-Arassi stressed that there is “internal institutional failure and external political failure,” considering this a loss for the group, which the world knows nothing about, according to him.
In turn, diplomatic sources in the internationally recognized Yemeni government reported that the Syrian authorities asked representatives of the Houthi group to evacuate the Yemeni embassy in Damascus.
The Yemeni ambassador to Morocco, Ezzedine Al-Asbahi, said in a tweet on his account on the “X” platform, today, Wednesday, that the Syrian authorities asked “impersonators of diplomatic status from the Houthi group to evacuate the Yemeni embassy in Damascus.”
He added that this step comes as a result of the recent communication between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Yemeni government, Ahmed bin Mubarak, and his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Al-Miqdad, in Cairo, on the ninth of last September, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, which is the first meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries in about 12 years. years; Specifically since 2011.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Yemeni Hadath platform reported from its sources that the Syrian authorities had asked the militia representatives to leave the country as soon as possible, noting that the chief representative of the militia and impersonator of the ambassador, Abdullah Sabri, had already left Damascus a week ago under the pretext of treatment.
The sources said that the leaders of the Houthi militia, including "Yasser Al-Muhalhal, Radwan Al-Haimi, Moataz Al-Qurashi, and Ammar Ismail," actually began evacuating the embassy, with extensive looting of its contents, despite Syrian directives not to take any of its equipment, possessions, and diplomatic cars.
According to the platform, the directives come as a translation of the atmosphere of Arab reconciliation led by Saudi Arabia, and in preparation for handing over the embassy to the Yemeni government, a month after the foreign ministers of Yemen and Syria met in Cairo to discuss the issue of the embassy and the relations of the two countries.
In November 2020, the Houthi militia appointed Abdullah Sabri as its ambassador to Syria, succeeding its previous ambassador, Naif Al-Qans, whom it named as its ambassador to Damascus in March 2016, as the militia’s first ambassador to a foreign country.
