Security Council Convenes on Yemen Crisis Following Houthis' Terrorist Designation
The United Nations Security Council held an urgent session today to address the escalating crisis in Yemen, following the recent classification of the Houthi rebel group, also known as Ansar Allah, as a terrorist organization by the United States.
The session was marked by intense discussions on the implications of this designation and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region.
UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, delivered a poignant statement, emphasizing the need for coordinated international efforts to achieve lasting peace in Yemen.
"The classification of the Houthis as a terrorist organization adds a new layer of complexity to an already dire situation," Grundberg stated.
"It is imperative that we continue to push for a political solution and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstruction".
Grundberg also called for the immediate and unconditional release of UN staff and other detainees held by the Houthis, highlighting the recent death of a World Food Programme staff member in detention as a "deplorable tragedy".
He urged all parties to refrain from military posturing and retaliatory measures that could further escalate the conflict.
The Security Council members echoed Grundberg's sentiments, stressing the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and upholding maritime security.
They also underscored the need for continued diplomatic engagement to pave the way for a durable political solution.
As the session concluded, the Council reiterated its commitment to supporting Yemen in its pursuit of peace and stability, while acknowledging the significant challenges that lie ahead.
