Yemenia Airways Begins Selling Tickets in National Currency Amid Economic Reforms

Aden,— Yemenia Airways has officially begun selling airline tickets in the Yemeni rial, marking a significant shift in its payment policy aimed at easing travel access and supporting national economic stability.
The move comes as part of broader efforts by the internationally recognized government to reinforce the use of the national currency in commercial transactions and reduce reliance on foreign currencies amid ongoing economic challenges.
In a statement issued by the airline’s management, Yemenia confirmed that ticket sales at its offices in government-controlled areas will now be processed in Yemeni rials, based on official exchange rates set by the Central Bank of Yemen. The policy is expected to benefit thousands of travelers who previously faced difficulties purchasing tickets priced in U.S. dollars.
“This decision reflects our commitment to national priorities and to making air travel more accessible for Yemeni citizens,” the statement read.
Travel agencies and booking offices have begun updating their systems to accommodate the change, while the airline urged passengers to verify pricing and payment procedures before booking.
The announcement has been welcomed by economic observers and civil society groups, who view it as a step toward restoring confidence in the national currency and improving transparency in the aviation sector.
Yemenia Airways, the country’s flagship carrier, operates flights to regional and international destinations from hubs in Aden and Seiyun. The airline has faced operational challenges due to the conflict and fragmentation of financial institutions across Yemen.
