UNSC Committee 2140 lifts sanctions on Yemen's former president and his son

The UN Security Council's sanctions committee on Tuesday removed the names of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his son Ahmed from the sanctions list of individuals and entities impeding peace in Yemen. A press release published on the UN website confirmed that the Security Council Committee, established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014), on July 30, 2024, removed Saleh and his son from the sanctions list of individuals and entities.
The first name, according to the statement, is “Ali Abdullah Saleh, Chairman of the Yemeni General People's Congress Party, former President of the Republic of Yemen, listed on November 7, 2014, and amended on November 20, 2014, and April 23, 2018. The second name is: Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, a former ambassador, a former brigadier general in the Republican Guard, and a resident of the United Arab Emirates, who was listed on April 14, 2015, and amended on September 16, 2015.
According to the statement, “Ahmed Saleh has played a key role in facilitating Houthi military expansion and has engaged in acts that threaten the peace, security, or stability of Yemen. On November 7, 2014, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and two Houthi leaders for “threatening peace and stability” in Yemen.
