Internal Displacement in Yemen Drops by 14%

Sana’a — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a 14% decrease in internal displacement across Yemen last week, marking a modest but notable shift in population movement trends amid fluctuating security conditions.
According to the latest update from IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), the number of newly displaced families fell from 139 to 119 between October 13 and October 19, representing a week-on-week decline of 14%. The reduction is attributed to a temporary lull in armed clashes and improved access to certain conflict-prone areas, particularly in Ma’rib, Al Hodeidah, and Taiz governorates.
Despite the drop, humanitarian agencies caution that Yemen remains one of the world’s most displacement-affected countries, with over 4.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) recorded since the outbreak of conflict in 2015. Many families continue to live in precarious conditions, lacking access to shelter, food, and medical care.
“The decline in displacement is encouraging, but it does not signal a resolution to the crisis,” said an IOM spokesperson. “We continue to monitor the situation closely and urge all parties to prioritize civilian protection and humanitarian access.”
The report also highlights that return movements remain limited, with most displaced families unable to go back to their areas of origin due to insecurity, damaged infrastructure, or lack of basic services.
Humanitarian organizations are calling for sustained funding and diplomatic efforts to support displaced populations and facilitate durable solutions, including voluntary return, local integration, and resettlement.
The IOM’s weekly tracking serves as a vital tool for aid agencies and policymakers, helping to guide emergency response and long-term planning in a country where over 21 million people rely on humanitarian assistance.
