Yemen : Houthi Militias Accused by Creating Sugar Shortage in Sanaa to Fuel Black Market Sales

Sana'a -- Local residents in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, have reported that Houthi militias are deliberately engineering a shortage of sugar in the city, allegedly to profit from black market sales. The accusations come amid growing frustration over the scarcity of basic commodities in Houthi-controlled areas.
According to eyewitness accounts, large quantities of sugar have mysteriously disappeared from public markets and government-run distribution centers, while prices have surged dramatically in recent days. Residents claim that Houthi-affiliated traders are stockpiling sugar supplies and selling them at inflated prices through unofficial channels.
This alleged manipulation of essential goods has sparked outrage among citizens, many of whom are already struggling with economic hardship and food insecurity. “They’re creating the crisis themselves,” said one Sanaa resident. “Then they sell sugar at double the price in the black market while we can barely afford bread.”
The incident adds to a growing list of grievances against the Houthi leadership, which has been accused of exploiting humanitarian aid and controlling access to vital resources for political and financial gain. Economic experts warn that such practices not only deepen public suffering but also undermine efforts to stabilize Yemen’s fragile economy.
Human rights groups and international observers have called for greater transparency and accountability in the distribution of food and aid in conflict zones, urging the international community to monitor and address the misuse of humanitarian resources.
As the situation unfolds, residents continue to demand answers and relief from what they describe as a manufactured crisis driven by corruption and greed.
