Houthi Militants Seize Four UN Vehicles in Sanaa, Including Two Armored Units
Sana'a -- Houthi militants have seized four vehicles belonging to the United Nations in the capital city of Sanaa, including two armored cars operated by the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), according to senior UN officials.
The incident occurred earlier this month when armed Houthi forces stormed the premises of the United Nations Human Rights Office in Sanaa. During the raid, they confiscated documents, furniture, and vehicles, including the armored units designated for the protection of UN personnel. Local staff were reportedly forced to surrender their belongings and official equipment under duress.
This seizure marks a significant breach of international norms protecting diplomatic and humanitarian operations.
The United Nations has strongly condemned the act, describing it as part of a broader crackdown by the Iran-aligned group on international agencies and foreign missions operating in Yemen.
The Houthis have increasingly targeted UN offices, aid organizations, and embassies amid rising regional tensions linked to the conflict in Gaza and Red Sea maritime disruptions.
A UN spokesperson confirmed that the confiscated vehicles included two armored units critical to the safety of UN staff working in high-risk environments. The remaining two vehicles were standard utility cars used for logistical support. The seizure has raised serious concerns about the safety of humanitarian workers and the operational capacity of the UN in northern Yemen.
The United Nations has called for the immediate return of the vehicles and restoration of access to its facilities. It also urged all parties to respect the neutrality and protection of humanitarian missions under international law.
This latest development comes amid reports that at least six UN personnel have been detained by Houthi authorities in recent weeks, further complicating the organization’s ability to deliver aid and monitor human rights conditions in the region.
