Yemen : Flights Halted at Socotra Airport, Leaving Island Isolated
Socotra — Local residents and maritime sources said the closure of Socotra International Airport has left the Yemeni island almost completely cut off from the outside world, with dozens of foreign nationals from Western, Eastern, and Arab countries stranded amid mounting public anger.
Large crowds gathered outside the airport in recent days, staging demonstrations to demand the resumption of flights. Protesters voiced concern that the suspension has deepened the island’s isolation, disrupting travel and humanitarian access.
According to aviation sources, the shutdown followed a decision by Saudi Arabia to halt all flights to and from Socotra, including services operated by Yemen Airways. Maritime officials confirmed that all air traffic ceased in recent days, with airport staff vacating their posts and returning home, leaving only security guards on duty.
No official statement has been issued to clarify the reasons behind the closure or indicate how long it will remain in effect.
The absence of information has fueled uncertainty among residents and stranded travelers, who say the suspension has created a humanitarian and logistical crisis on the island.
