Ma’rib governorate is divided by the frontline and has experienced massive displacement since 2021.
Indeed, as many as 90 per cent of the population of 1.6 million people in Mar’ib governorate are internally displaced.

UNHCR’s office in Ma’rib covers Ma’rib City, Ma’rib Al-Wadi, and Harib districts. These three districts alone have 210 sites for internally displaced people (IDPs), hosting almost 50,000 IDP families.

While the frontline has remained relatively stable since 2022, regular outbreaks of localized conflict occur.

Strategically important and resource rich, there remains a significant risk of renewed conflict and substantial additional displacement.

Focus in 2024

Should the security situation remain stable, there is scope to build self-reliance capacities and seek durable solutions in Ma’rib in 2024, including through livelihoods support, local integration support, and support with more durable shelter and housing assistance.

At the same time, the situation remains precarious, with frequent instances of new or repeat displacement, requiring immediate humanitarian and protection assistance.

UNHCR in Ma’rib implements a tri-cluster approach, working across protection, shelter and non-food items (NFIs), and camp coordination and camp management (CCCM).

17656 Internally displaced families (almost 100,000 individuals) supported with core relief items.

18,912 Internally displaced families (over 100,000 individuals) assessed to identify needs and vulnerabilities.

> 5,000 Internally displaced families (almost 30,000 individuals) at six sites benefited from camp coordination and camp management activities.
