UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg, completed a visit , Today Thursday to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where he held discussions with Yemeni, regional and international officials and diplomats, about efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement throughout the country and start an inclusive political process among Yemenis under UN auspices.
A statement issued by the Office of the UN Envoy stated that the discussions focused on the next steps in order to facilitate reaching an agreement on measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, a ceasefire throughout the country, and an inclusive political process among Yemenis under UN auspices.
Grundberg met with the head of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, to discuss developments in UN mediation efforts.
The Special Envoy stressed that Yemen is going through a critical juncture that still holds the opportunity to bring the Yemenis closer to achieving the just peace they aspire to.
The UN envoy also held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Al-Budaiwi, where they agreed on the need for the region’s continued support for Yemen throughout the path of peace and recovery.
According to the statement, Grundberg met with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, to discuss ways to continue concerted regional and international efforts in an effort to resume a political process facilitated by the United Nations.
Grundberg also held discussions with the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council on the need for the Security Council to continue to agree to support a sustainable and comprehensive political solution in Yemen that meets the aspirations of Yemeni men and women.
“A sustainable solution to the conflict in Yemen can only be crafted by Yemenis themselves,” Grundberg said. He added, "The parties must come together with others within an inclusive framework to build a common peaceful future."
He reiterated the United Nations’ commitment and readiness to provide space for negotiation once the parties take the decisive steps necessary to turn this vision into reality.”
