Red Cross Opens Medical Clinic at Saada Remand Prison

Saada, Yemen — The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in collaboration with local prison authorities, has inaugurated a new medical clinic at the Saada New Remand Prison, aiming to enhance healthcare services and living conditions for detainees.
The facility, which houses a large number of inmates—including migrants and individuals with conflict-related injuries—will now offer timely and dignified access to essential medical care, according to ICRC officials. The initiative is part of the organization’s broader humanitarian mission to support Yemen’s penitentiary system and uphold international standards for detainee treatment.
“By supporting the establishment of a functional and well-equipped health facility, the ICRC helps ensure detainees have access to the essential medical care they need, preventing chronic health deterioration and disease outbreaks,” said Christine Cipolla, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Yemen.
The clinic is expected to serve as a model for future infrastructure upgrades in other detention centers across the country.
The ICRC has long maintained a presence in Yemen, conducting regular visits to places of detention and working with authorities to improve conditions and address protection concerns.
This development comes amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges in Yemen, where access to healthcare remains severely limited for vulnerable populations.
