Aden – At least six people have died and four others sustained injuries in western Yemen’s Hodeidah province since the beginning of August, following a series of severe thunderstorms and flash floods that have swept through the region.

Local authorities confirmed that the fatalities were caused by lightning strikes and torrential rains that triggered flooding across several districts, including Zabid, Bayt al-Faqih, Al-Jarahi, and Al-Zahra. 

Victims included farmers, children, and elderly residents caught off guard by sudden weather shifts while working in open fields or traveling between villages.

The province’s security department has urged citizens to exercise extreme caution during rainfall, warning of continued risks from lightning, rising water levels, and unstable terrain. Emergency teams have been deployed to monitor vulnerable areas and assist affected families.

“These incidents are a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather, especially in rural communities with limited access to early warning systems,” said a spokesperson from the local disaster response unit.

The recent wave of storms has also damaged homes, agricultural lands, and key roadways, further straining infrastructure already weakened by years of conflict and underinvestment.

Meteorologists predict continued rainfall in the western coastal region, prompting renewed calls for preparedness and community awareness campaigns to mitigate future casualties.
