Yemeni Security Forces Seize Over One Million Narcotic Pills in Major Operation in Lahj
Aden — Security forces in southern Yemen have announced the seizure of more than 1.08 million narcotic pills during a large-scale anti-smuggling operation in Al-Mudaraba and Ras Al-Arah district of Lahj Governorate.
The operation marks one of the most significant drug busts in the region this year.
According to an official statement by the Southern Joint Security Campaign, a patrol unit stopped a suspicious Dina-type transport truck in the coastal area of Al-Hajaf. Upon inspection, officers discovered 144 cartons hidden inside the vehicle, containing Pregabalin (300 mg) pills—an anti-epileptic drug often misused as a narcotic.
The shipment, believed to be intended for illegal distribution across multiple governorates, was immediately confiscated. Eight individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt and are currently under investigation.
Brigadier General Hamdi Shukri, commander of the 2nd Brigade overseeing the operation, praised the vigilance of the security forces and reaffirmed the commitment to combating drug trafficking networks that exploit Yemen’s porous borders and ongoing instability.
“This operation sends a clear message to smugglers and criminal networks: we are watching, and we will act,” Shukri said.
The seizure comes amid growing concerns over the rise in Captagon and prescription drug abuse in Yemen, particularly in areas affected by conflict and economic hardship. Authorities have called for enhanced regional cooperation to stem the flow of narcotics and dismantle trafficking routes.
The pills have been transferred to a secure facility pending further legal procedures, and the case has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
