YemenNet Users Decry Poor Service, Vanishing Data, and Alleged Package Manipulation
SANAA — Internet users across Yemen have voiced growing frustration over deteriorating service quality and alleged manipulation of data packages by YemenNet, the country’s primary internet provider operating under Houthi control.
In recent weeks, customers have taken to social media and local forums to complain about frequent disconnections, sluggish speeds, and unexplained data depletion, particularly on home broadband lines and 4G services. Many users report that their data balances are being consumed at an unusually rapid rate, even when usage is minimal.
“I barely used my connection for emails and messaging, yet my entire 4G package disappeared in a day,” said a resident of Sana’a. Others echoed similar concerns, accusing YemenNet of lacking transparency in data metering and throttling speeds without notice.
The complaints come amid broader dissatisfaction with the state of digital infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas. Technical experts suggest that the network’s instability is exacerbated by outdated infrastructure, limited international bandwidth, and alleged internal mismanagement. A recent cyberattack in August 2025 also disrupted services across several provinces, further eroding public trust.
YemenNet has not issued an official response to the latest wave of complaints. However, users say customer service channels are unresponsive, and attempts to seek refunds or explanations have been largely unsuccessful.
The situation has prompted calls for regulatory oversight and independent audits of telecom services in Yemen, where internet access remains a lifeline for education, business, and humanitarian coordination. Advocacy groups warn that continued degradation of connectivity could deepen the country’s digital divide and isolate vulnerable communities.
With no viable alternatives in many regions, users say they are left with little choice but to endure the poor service — or go offline entirely.
