U.S. Federal Court Sentences Yemeni National to Five Years for Human Smuggling and Money Laundering
Washington — A U.S. federal judge has sentenced Yemeni citizen Haidar Al-Muntasir to five years in prison after convicting him of participating in an international human smuggling and money laundering network operating out of Alabama, according to court documents and media reports.
Al-Muntasir had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit international money laundering, admitting his role in facilitating illegal entry into the United States and transferring illicit funds across borders. Prosecutors revealed that the network involved smuggling individuals from Yemen and other countries into the U.S., using fraudulent documentation and underground routes.
The sentencing took place in a federal court in Mobile, Alabama, where the judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and their impact on national security and immigration enforcement. The court also noted that Al-Muntasir had used legitimate businesses, including a gas station, to conceal financial transactions linked to the smuggling operation.
Defense attorneys argued for leniency, describing the sentence as “excessive,” but the court upheld the full five-year term, citing the transnational nature of the crimes and the risks posed to public safety.
This case highlights growing concerns over human trafficking networks exploiting vulnerable populations and laundering proceeds through U.S.-based entities. Authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to dismantle such operations and prosecute those involved.
Al-Muntasir is expected to serve his sentence in a federal correctional facility and may face deportation proceedings upon completion of his term.
