Italian Frigate Caio Duilio Arrives in Red Sea to Protect Commercial Shipping

Aden — The Italian Navy has officially deployed its advanced air-defense frigate Caio Duilio (D 554) to the Red Sea, reinforcing international efforts to secure vital maritime trade routes amid rising regional threats. The move comes under Italy’s broader Operation “Mediterraneo Sicuro” (“Secure Mediterranean”), aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation and deterring hostile actions against civilian vessels.
The deployment was announced following a strategic video conference between Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, during which both leaders emphasized the urgency of protecting global commerce and maintaining stability in the region.
“The destabilizing terrorist activity of the Houthis must be countered,” Crosetto stated. “Italy will do its part, alongside the international community, to ensure the safety of maritime routes and uphold international law.”
The Caio Duilio, equipped with advanced radar and missile systems, previously operated in the Eastern Mediterranean and now joins the EU-led Operation Atalanta, which has been active in the region since 2008. Italy’s increased naval presence also aims to prevent economic disruptions and environmental risks linked to attacks on shipping.
