Warning Issued Over Alleged Houthi Scheme to Turn Yemen into Drug Hub

Sana’a– Security and political sources have issued a stark warning about what they describe as a “systematic Houthi project” aimed at transforming Yemen into a regional corridor and production center for narcotics.
According to recent intelligence assessments and statements from officials in the internationally recognized government, the Houthi group is allegedly facilitating the smuggling, cultivation, and local manufacturing of illicit drugs in areas under its control. The warning comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of drug networks operating across the country’s porous borders and conflict zones.
“This is not an isolated activity—it’s an organized effort with regional implications,” said a senior security official. “Yemen risks becoming a transit route and a manufacturing base for narcotics, threatening public health, regional stability, and international security.”
The alleged operations reportedly involve coordination with foreign networks and exploit Yemen’s deteriorating infrastructure and law enforcement vacuum. Officials have called for urgent international cooperation to monitor trafficking routes, support border control, and prevent the country from sliding further into criminal exploitation.
Human rights advocates and civil society groups have also voiced alarm over the social impact of drug proliferation, particularly in impoverished communities and among vulnerable youth.
The Houthi group has not responded to the allegations. Independent verification remains difficult due to restricted access to affected areas and ongoing conflict.
