International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. However, it is also a day to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles and violations faced by women around the world. 

In Yemen, the situation for women has been particularly dire, with more than 8,400 documented violations against Yemeni women in recent years.

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating conflict since 2014, when the Houthi militia took control of the capital, Sanaa, and other parts of the country. 

The war has led to widespread suffering, with women and girls bearing the brunt of the violence and instability. The Houthis have systematically violated the rights of women and girls, restricting their freedom of movement, expression, health, and work.

Violations Against Yemeni Women

Freedom of Movement: Houthi authorities have imposed severe restrictions on women's freedom of movement. 

Women are required to travel with a mahram (a close male relative or their husband) or obtain written approval from their male guardian. These restrictions have effectively cut off many women from receiving humanitarian aid and carrying out their work.

Freedom of Expression: Women who speak out against the Houthi regime or advocate for their rights face persecution, imprisonment, and even torture. 

Activists and journalists have been targeted, with many being detained in unknown locations and subjected to illegal and immoral interrogation.

Health and Reproductive Rights: The Houthis have impeded women's access to healthcare, particularly reproductive health services. 

Women have been denied access to essential medical care, leading to increased maternal mortality rates and other health complications.

Economic and Social Rights: Women have been barred from many public places, including cafes, restaurants, and workplaces. The Houthis have also imposed strict dress codes, requiring women to wear long, black abayas. 

These restrictions have forced many women to leave their jobs, resulting in a loss of income and increased economic hardship for their families.

Impact on Yemeni Women

The violations against Yemeni women have had a profound impact on their lives. Many women have lost their lives due to direct violence, such as sniper fire, shelling, and landmine explosions. Others have sustained permanent disabilities and suffer from severe psychological conditions as a result of the ongoing conflict.

On this International Women's Day, it is crucial to highlight the plight of Yemeni women and call for an end to the systematic violations of their rights. The international community must take urgent action to support Yemeni women and ensure their safety, dignity, and well-being. By raising awareness and advocating for change, we can help create a better future for Yemeni women and girls.
