Yemen : Cargo ships around Red sea "On high alert" After renewed houthi threat

March 12, 2025 -- Shipping companies operating in the Red Sea have heightened their security measures following renewed threats from the Houthi rebels. The Iran-backed armed group has issued warnings against Israeli-affiliated cargo ships, declaring that "any Israeli vessel" in the region is a target.
Increased Threat Level
The Houthis have announced a ban on the passage of all Israeli ships in the Red Sea, effective immediately. They have warned that any Israeli ship attempting to violate this ban will be targeted.
Past Attacks
Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out at least 113 separate attacks on commercial vessels, resulting in the deaths of four mariners and the seizure of one commercial vessel.
International Response
The United States and Britain have formed a coalition to protect commercial traffic in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks. This coalition has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi facilities and weapons systems in Yemen.
Regional and Global Implications
Security Concerns: The renewed Houthi threats pose a significant security risk to cargo ships operating in the Red Sea region. Shipping companies are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their vessels and crew.
Economic Impact
The threat of attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea could disrupt global trade and have far-reaching economic consequences. The Red Sea is a critical maritime route for international trade, and any sustained disruption could impact global supply chains.
Insurance Costs
The increased threat level has led to a rise in insurance premiums for ships operating in the Red Sea, which could result in higher costs for consumers.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and ensure the security of maritime routes. As tensions rise, the need for a comprehensive and peaceful resolution becomes increasingly urgent.
