A dangerous new phase... an international warning against not extending the truce in Yemen

While the Iranian-backed Houthi militia's violations of the UN-sponsored humanitarian truce, which since its entry into force in early April have exceeded more than 8,000 violations, have not ended, the International Crisis Group (ICG) warned of the repercussions of not extending and expanding the truce. It will take Yemen towards a new phase of the war, with the deepening of the hunger crisis in the country.
In its latest report, titled "Ten Challenges to the United Nations in 2022-2023", the group stressed that if the United Nations envoy and his partners from the Member States are unable to help the parties find a way to move forward and extend and expand the armistice, while maintaining an uneasy calm. If the stability that may allow for long-awaited talks about the country's future, this may herald that Yemen is heading towards a new phase of the war.
The report added that, so far, matters are still under control, despite reports of hundreds of minor violations.
She also warned against changing this calm, with unimaginable consequences.
Opening roads is a priority
She also stressed that a political settlement in Yemen is still far from being achieved, referring to the inability of the parties to reach an agreement on reopening roads in and around the besieged city of Taiz.
In its report, the Crisis Group also accused the Houthi group of not complying with the implementation of the terms of the UN armistice.
She noted the recognized Yemeni government's commitment to the terms by allowing commercial flights to the capital, Sanaa, for the first time in 6 years, and ensuring the flow of fuel to the Red Sea port of Hodeidah.
Meanwhile, Al-Houthi refuses to agree to discuss reopening roads in and around Taiz without taking any real action to open roads in the besieged city.
She stressed the need to end the siege as a priority in order to have the best chances of success, as well as finding a way to pay salaries, stop hostilities and then end the war.
The Crisis Group called on world leaders who will meet on September 19 in the framework of the annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly, not to focus only on the war in Ukraine and ignore the rest of the important issues in the world, in reference to the Yemen crisis.
It is noteworthy that the Yemeni government had confirmed that the violations of the humanitarian truce sponsored by the United Nations, since its entry into force at the beginning of last April, have so far exceeded 8,000 violations.
The government also stressed the importance of converging views with regard to dealing with terrorist groups and mobilizing international efforts in support of Yemen in confronting these groups, represented by the Houthi militia, Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
