UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths vowed Wednesday to implement directives of the UN Secretary General and abide by the three references to solve the Yemeni crisis.
These references are represented by the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative and its executive mechanism, outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue conference and UN resolution 2216.
His comments were made on the sidelines of his meeting with Vice President Ali Mohsen Saleh al-Ahmar in Riyadh on Wednesday, especially after the relations between the legitimate government and Griffiths has recently witnessed some tension.
The government has explicitly demanded the right implementation of articles stipulated in the Stockholm agreement, especially in regards to the redeployment in Hodeidah, in accordance with the agreed “concept of operations.”
Ahmar, for his part, stressed the legitimate government’s keenness to achieve peace and its adherence to the full implementation of the Stockholm agreement, especially with regard to the actual withdrawal of Houthi militias from Hodeidah’s city and ports and the completion of the prisoners and detainees’ issue.
He expressed Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi’s appreciation for Antonio Guterres’s positive response and his emphasis on UN’s commitment to the three recognized references.
In addition, Guterres shed light on the importance of committing to the full implementation of the Stockholm Agreement, noting that the legitimate government is the only representative of Yemenis and maintaining a positive relation with this government is the key to solve the crisis and resume the peace process.
Ahmar also noted that the legitimate government has dealt positively and flexibly with the UN envoy from the beginning, adding that it has made many concessions in order to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people, end the coup and restore the state in accordance with the three terms of reference.
He said that Iranian-backed militias are continuing with their military escalation through bombing cities, launching drones and ballistic missiles towards Saudi Arabia and targeting international navigation.
Ahmar noted that these steps indicate their intention to continue this war and double humanitarian suffering.A.A
