Fighting erupted between the Yemeni army and the Houthi rebels in the port city of Hodeidah on Wednesday morning, local residents said. Dozens of families in al-Minkim village of al-Durayhimi district in the south of Hodeidah were caught in the crossfire, the residents in the port city said. Rockets and artillery shells were used by both warring forces in the clashes in the vast farms around the village, they said. Hodeidah has seen a shaky cease-fire between the government forces and the Houthi rebels since they reached a UN-sponsored truce in Stockholm in December 2018. The Yemeni port city is under the control of the Houthis, while the government forces have advanced to the southern and eastern districts. Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi militia stormed several northern provinces and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa. The United Nations is trying to end the conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed the Arab country to the brink of famine.
