EU Mission Condemns All Violations Against Journalists in Yemen
Sana’a – The European Union (EU) Mission in Yemen issued a strong statement on Monday denouncing the ongoing violations against journalists across the country. The mission emphasized that media professionals face “grave risks” while performing their duties and called for their protection under all circumstances.
In its official statement, the EU Mission expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions for press freedom in Yemen, citing abductions, harassment, and arbitrary detention as part of a broader pattern of abuse targeting journalists. The mission urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and uphold the rights of media workers.
"Journalists in Yemen are operating under extreme danger. Their safety must be guaranteed at all times, and those who have been abducted or imprisoned must be released immediately," the statement read.
The EU also called for an end to the culture of impunity surrounding attacks on journalists, stressing that accountability is essential to preserving freedom of expression and the public’s right to information. The mission reiterated its support for independent journalism and the role of media in promoting transparency and democratic values.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that journalists in Yemen are being targeted by various factions, including the Houthis, the Southern Transitional Council, and government forces. Many have fled the country, while others remain imprisoned or have been forced to abandon their work due to threats and violence.
The EU’s condemnation comes ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed annually on November 2, and aligns with broader European efforts to protect press freedom in conflict zones.
