UNSC Reviews Latest Political, Military, and Humanitarian Developments in Yemen
Aden – The United Nations Security Council convened today for a special session to assess the latest political, military, and humanitarian developments in Yemen, as the country continues to grapple with a decade-long conflict and deepening humanitarian crisis.
During the open briefing, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg presented a comprehensive update on mediation efforts and the challenges facing the peace process.
He emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and resume inclusive negotiations, warning that recent regional dynamics—particularly threats of renewed hostilities involving the Houthis and Israel—could further destabilize Yemen.
Representatives from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also addressed the Council, highlighting that over 19 million Yemenis remain in need of life-saving assistance, with access to basic services and humanitarian corridors increasingly restricted.
In the closed portion of the meeting, Council members discussed the renewal of sanctions under Resolution 2140, including travel bans and asset freezes targeting individuals obstructing peace efforts.
They also considered extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts tasked with monitoring violations and reporting to the Council.
Several member states expressed concern over the fragile security landscape, urging all parties to exercise restraint and recommit to the UN-led peace framework.
Calls were also made to protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian access, and prevent Yemen from becoming a proxy battleground amid rising regional tensions.
The session underscored the international community’s continued engagement in Yemen’s crisis, with diplomats warning that inaction could lead to further escalation and humanitarian collapse.
