EU Backs Local Economic Recovery , Heritage Preservation in Yemen’s Hadramout
Hadramout – The European Union has stepped up its support for Yemen’s recovery by funding key initiatives aimed at reviving local economies and preserving cultural heritage in the eastern governorate of Hadramout, a region known for its rich history and agricultural potential.
Through its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNESCO, the EU has launched a series of projects focused on strengthening institutional and economic resilience, particularly in the city of Tarim and surrounding districts. These efforts include revitalizing traditional industries such as date farming, supporting small and micro enterprises, and restoring historic sites that have suffered from neglect and conflict.
One of the flagship programs is the Dates Value Chain Study, conducted in Tarim with the support of SMEPS (Small and Micro Enterprise Promotion Service). The study identified gaps and opportunities in the local date industry, aiming to improve production, marketing, and export capacity. This initiative is part of a broader EU-funded strategy to empower rural communities and enhance food security.
In parallel, the EU has joined forces with UNESCO to protect Yemen’s endangered cultural heritage. During the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, both organizations unveiled collaborative projects under the theme “Creating Livelihood Opportunities through Heritage and Creativity.” These projects aim to restore historic buildings, promote cultural tourism, and create jobs for artisans and youth in Hadramout and other heritage-rich regions.
“Culture is not only a source of identity—it’s a driver of resilience and economic opportunity,” said an EU representative during the UNESCO event.
The EU’s support reflects its broader commitment to Yemen, with over €120 million in humanitarian aid allocated in 2025 alone, and nearly €1 billion since 2015. By investing in both emergency relief and long-term recovery, the EU seeks to help Yemenis rebuild their lives and preserve their heritage amid ongoing challenges.
These initiatives come at a critical time, as Yemen continues to face economic hardship, conflict, and climate-related pressures. Hadramout, while relatively stable compared to other regions, remains vulnerable and in need of sustained international engagement.
