Yemen : WFP Maintains Suspension of Operations in Houthi-Controlled Areas
Sana’a — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has confirmed the continuation of its suspension of all humanitarian operations in areas under Houthi control, citing the ongoing detention of 38 staff members and the rapidly deteriorating food security situation across Yemen.
According to WFP statements, the suspension follows the arbitrary arrest of UN personnel by Houthi authorities since late August, including members of WFP’s field teams.
The organization described the detentions as “unacceptable” and warned that they severely undermine humanitarian efforts in the country.
The halt in operations comes at a critical time, as 35% of Yemeni households are currently facing severe food shortages, raising fears of widespread famine in the months ahead.
WFP officials stressed that the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to safeguard staff and uphold humanitarian principles.
International calls have intensified for the Houthis to immediately release all detained UN employees and allow humanitarian agencies to resume their work, as millions of Yemenis remain dependent on food assistance for survival.
