In a continuing effort to combat illegal migration, Yemeni security forces intercepted a smuggling vessel carrying 150 undocumented African migrants off the coast of Shabwa Governorate on wednesday, July 15, 2025.

The boat, named Al-Safa, was operated by a crew of three Somali nationals and was transporting 120 Ethiopian men and 30 Ethiopian women from the Horn of Africa. 

Authorities confirmed that the migrants had entered Yemeni waters illegally and were en route to Gulf countries, using Yemen as a transit point.

This incident marks the latest in a series of irregular migration cases along Yemen’s eastern shores. 

Officials cited logistical challenges in handling such operations due to limited resources for detention and deportation. 

Coordination is underway with humanitarian agencies to provide medical care and determine next steps for the migrants.

Yemen continues to face mounting pressure from the influx of migrants, with over 15,000 arrivals reported in January alone, according to the International Organization for Migration. 

The government has reiterated its commitment to securing borders and addressing the root causes of human trafficking.

Security officials emphasized the need for international cooperation to manage migration flows and support vulnerable populations affected by these perilous journeys.
